Advocates across British Columbia now have enhanced tools to support those facing challenging legal issues. Throughout the last year, we created new content (and adapted valuable content previously maintained by Legal Aid BC) now available both online at peopleslawschool.ca and in print. These materials provide clear and actionable legal information that can be shared with clients or used to inform your own understanding.
Welfare and disability benefits
People’s Law helps simplify the complexities of applying for and maintaining income assistance and disability benefits. The online resources cover the benefits available, eligibility requirements, the application process, and what to do if benefits are denied or reduced. We explain rights and responsibilities clearly, helping advocates support clients navigating a system that can feel overwhelming. Print and PDF versions of Applying for Disability Benefits and Applying for Welfare Benefits are also available.
Mortgage default
For homeowners facing financial difficulties, we've deepened our information on what happens when mortgage payments can't be made. The content walks through available options, from negotiating with lenders to understanding foreclosure proceedings. We also explain how to protect your rights throughout the process and where to find additional support.
Sponsorship breakdown
This can be a tremendously trying and stressful situation for newcomers. Our coverage of sponsorship addresses what happens legally when a sponsorship relationship breaks down, including impacts on immigration status, financial obligations, and access to social services. A print publication is also available.
"My sponsor and I separated, and I didn't know what would happen to me. I was terrified I'd have to leave Canada and my children. A settlement worker gave me this booklet, and for the first time someone was speaking directly to my situation. It helped me understand my rights and what steps I needed to take. I felt heard and capable of handling what came next."

All of these resources are written in plain language, avoiding unnecessary jargon while remaining thorough and accurate. Advocates across the province can use these materials to better serve their communities. And for additional, on-call, anonymous support, ask our chatbot Beagle+ for help about these topics, and more.
