We've published comprehensive new guidance to help British Columbians navigate the province's welfare system. These pages were adapted from print booklets previously published by Legal Aid BC.
“I was in a tough spot. I was out of a job, and I didn’t qualify for EI. I was skipping meals to save money, and was barely able to afford rent. A friend suggested I meet with a community worker, who encouraged me to apply for welfare. Now I don’t have to stress about paying for essentials while I sort out my work situation.”
– Pamela, Penticton, BC

Our four new web pages have digestible information on income assistance and disability benefits, and how to apply:
Welfare benefits overview describes the four types of assistance available in BC, including support and shelter allowances, income and asset limits, and available supplements. Learn how much monthly support amounts might be, along with additional help available through crisis supplements, transportation allowances, and health-related supports.
Disability benefits available covers assistance for those with severe impairments and barriers to being able to work, and how the persons with disabilities (PWD) designation works.
Two step-by-step guides walk through applying for income assistance and applying for disability benefits. We cover who’s eligible, break down what documents and other steps are required in applying, and offer suggestions on who can help.
In the new year, we’ll also have this information available in print. Look for our new titles Applying for Welfare Benefits and Applying for Disability Benefits, coming soon.
As well, we’ll be posting additional web pages in the new year on challenging a welfare decision and your rights while on income assistance or disability benefits.
