New (and Improved) Options for Free Legal Help

October 7, 2019

A new service offers free online mediation to help separating couples in British Columbia negotiate a parenting plan. And the popular Lawyer Referral Service has eliminated the $25 fee for an initial half-hour consultation with a lawyer.

The Family Resolution Centre is a new online mediation tool from Legal Services Society, providers of legal aid in the province. The free tool helps separated couples negotiate parenting time, vacations and other important details of their children’s care. If they choose, couples can ask for the help of a qualified mediator, and receive up to five hours of free assistance. To access the Family Resolution Centre, go to MyLawBC (mylawbc.com) and click on “Mediation Tool.”

The Lawyer Referral Service, operated for years by the BC Branch of the Canadian Bar Association, is now available through Access Pro Bono. The service provides callers with the contact details of a lawyer who will provide an initial half-hour consultation for free (the initial consultation used to be $25). The lawyer can provide some initial advice. Then, optionally, the person can hire that lawyer at their regular rates. To access the Lawyer Referral Service, call 1-800-663-1919 (toll-free) or 604-687-3221 (in the Lower Mainland) or visit the Access Pro Bono website.
