My partner and I are splitting up; where do I start looking for information?
My partner and I have been married for over 10 years, and now we're breaking up. Where should I start looking for information and help?
Family law or divorce law is the area of the law that deals with problems couples face when they break up — how property should be divided, how any children will be cared for, whether someone needs extra money to help pay the bills, and so on. Three excellent resources to get started are:
- JP Boyd on Family Law, a plain language, practical guide to family law in British Columbia. It includes a chapter that introduces family law and the ways family law problems are resolved in British Columbia.
- Family Law in British Columbia, a website from legal aid that provides step-by-step guides and fact sheets to help with various family law issues.
- Clicklaw's HelpMap, which features free and low-cost options for assistance with family law problems.
