Can I visit a friend right now? Neither of us are sick. We’ve even self-isolated for 3 weeks.

David Kandestin

It's not easy to understand what you can and can't do at this time — the messaging can be so mixed!

In BC, our government's strong recommendation is to keep physical distance and stay home except for essential errands. BC is advising its bylaw officers to not ticket or detain folks who aren't complying with these recommendations, but you may get stopped and issued a warning and your information may be given to public health officials.

Municipalities may have their own bylaws and standards. In Vancouver, bylaw officers can issue fines of up to $1,000 for those that ignore physical social distancing rules. Over in Nova Scotia, people have been issued tickets for parking their vehicle in prohibited areas. Whether that will start to happen in BC remains to be seen.

I'm sure you're thinking — "well that doesn't answer my question" — and I can't blame you. It's a tricky time.

Use your judgment. Is it an essential errand to visit your friend? If so, will you keep proper physical distance from them when you visit? Could you visit through video chat instead? Unlike many other countries, our government is generally trusting citizens (except for those who have just returned from abroad, who must self-isolate) to take proper precautions. So, as of now, it's up to you to act with everyone in mind.
